    What is the STAR method in selection criteria?

    STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It’s a way to structure your responses using real examples from your experience to show how you meet the role’s requirements. It’s commonly used in government and public service applications.

    How do I choose the right examples?

    Pick examples that match what the criteria are asking for and the capability levels required. Consider leadership and capability frameworks for public service agencies. Aim for examples that are relevant, specific, and show impact. If you’re writing a pitch instead of responding to each criterion, choose examples that cover multiple areas at once.

    How long should each response be?

    If there are no guidelines, 150–200 words per criterion is usually a safe range. But always check the job ad or position description — some roles have specific word, page, or character limits. Keep it concise but thorough.

    Can I use the same example for more than one criterion?

    Yes, as long as it clearly fits. Just make sure you present it in a way that highlights the part of the story that’s most relevant to each criterion.

    What if I don’t have direct experience?

    Use what you do have. Think about transferable skills or examples from study, volunteering, or community work. Then explain how they relate to the criteria.

    What are the most common mistakes to avoid?

    Avoid vague language and general claims. Don’t spend too much time on background and context— focus on what you did and what happened as a result. Be clear, specific, and to the point.
